Your First Solo Trip: A Guide to Safe & Intentional Tripping at Home
Written by Sarah McGruddy

People enjoy taking magic truffles in a wide range of environments — from music festivals and forest walks to cozy parties or quiet afternoons at home. Tripping solo at home, especially for the first time, can feel both exciting and a little daunting. That’s why it’s essential to prepare a space and mindset that supports comfort, clarity, and personal growth.
In the psychedelic world, we always come back to three pillars: Set, Setting, and Dosage. Get these right, and you’re well on your way to a beautiful experience.
Set: Your Mindset Going In
Your set is your current state of mind — your emotions, thoughts, expectations, and overall mental energy.
Ask yourself:
- How am I feeling today?
- What’s been on my mind lately?
- Am I carrying any stress or emotional tension from the week?
Psychedelics tend to amplify what’s already beneath the surface. If you’ve had a challenging week or are avoiding certain thoughts, those things may arise during the trip. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing — but being aware and emotionally prepared makes all the difference.
Before your trip:
- Consider journaling. Write freely about how you’re feeling — no filter needed.
- Set an intention. This can be as simple as “I want to release tension” or “I’m open to creative insights.” A clear intention acts like a compass during your journey.
Setting: Your Physical Environment
Your setting is your physical space. When tripping alone, your home becomes your sanctuary — so it’s worth putting some love into it.
Who else is home?
- Do you live with others?
- Will they be around?
- Do they know you’re tripping?
It’s important to know how you’d feel if you bumped into someone mid-trip. If that thought makes you uncomfortable, plan your trip for a time when you’ll be alone, or clearly communicate your intentions to housemates.
Create a “Safe Zone”
Your space should feel soft, warm, and secure. This could be your bed, a corner of your living room, or your entire home and garden. Consider:
- Blankets and pillows
- Soft lighting (lamps, salt lamps, candles)
- Calming scents like lavender or palo santo
Tip: Some people don’t like mirrors while tripping, as reflections can feel strange or disorienting. Cover mirrors or shiny surfaces (like TVs or windows at night) if you think this might affect you.
Plan light activities
Think about what you’d enjoy doing during your trip:
- Journaling or meditating
- Drawing, painting, or crafting
- Watching nature documentaries or uplifting films
- Listening to music — either a familiar playlist or a new journey-style album

Have everything within arm’s reach, so once you’re deep in the experience, you won’t feel the need to get up and search for anything.
Dosage: Less Is More When You’re Alone
Your dosage can make or break the trip — especially when you’re solo.
If it’s your first time tripping alone, start low. Even if you’re experienced with higher doses in social settings, tripping solo feels different. With fewer distractions, your inner world becomes more vivid — and sometimes more intense.
Consider:
- Choosing a less potent truffle strain
- Taking a slightly smaller dose than you normally would
- Having a scale if you’re dividing doses
Reminder: You can always take more next time. The goal is to feel safe and supported throughout.
During the Trip: Check In With Yourself
Throughout your journey, take occasional pauses to reflect:
- How am I feeling?
- Am I still connected to my intention?
- Do I feel grounded and safe?
It’s okay to move, lie down, dance, stretch, or simply breathe. Let the experience unfold naturally — you don’t have to “do” anything.
If you feel overwhelmed, try grounding tools:
- Deep breaths (inhale 4 sec, hold 4, exhale 6)
- Holding a crystal, soft object, or warm cup of tea
- Listening to calming, familiar music
Aftercare: Integration Is Everything
Once the peak has passed, give yourself time to land gently. Don’t rush back into daily life.
Instead:
- Journal about what you experienced
- Sit outside and reflect
- Nourish your body with good food and hydration
- Take it easy the next day — rest is part of the healing
- Your brain has just undergone a kind of reset. The insights and sensations you experienced may continue to ripple for days or even weeks. Hold onto what you learned. Keep moving toward your higher self. And be proud — you just gave yourself a beautiful gift.
