You take magic mushrooms or magic truffles.
Twenty or thirty minutes later, something strange starts happening.
You yawn. Then again. And again.
Your eyes water. You want to stretch your whole body. Your breathing gets unusually deep.
There’s just one problem with the obvious explanation: you’re not tired.
For some people, that first big yawn is such a familiar part of the experience that they think, “Here we go. It’s starting.”
So why does psilocybin make some people yawn so much?
Online, you’ll hear plenty of theories: your brain needs more oxygen, you’re releasing stored trauma, your body is detoxing, the mushrooms are clearing negative energy. Those explanations sound convincing. The science, though, points somewhere more interesting — serotonin, psilocin, and the nervous system.
There’s a catch: scientists still don’t fully understand why humans yawn at all, so there’s no single proven explanation for why psilocybin triggers it. But what we do know gives us some genuinely interesting clues.
What Happens After You Consume Psilocybin?
Psilocybin and psilocin aren’t the same thing. Once psilocybin enters your body, it’s rapidly converted into its pharmacologically active metabolite, psilocin, which crosses into the brain and interacts with the serotonin system.
Lab studies confirm psilocin binds with meaningful affinity to three serotonin receptor types — 5-HT1A, 5-HT2A, and 5-HT2C — rather than locking onto just one (Erkizia-Santamaría et al., 2022). The 5-HT2A receptor matters most for the classic psychedelic effects, since its activation is what drives the shifts in perception, consciousness, thought, and sensory processing.
But we need to be careful. The fact that 5-HT2A drives the psychedelic experience doesn’t mean scientists have proven it specifically causes the yawning. Psilocin’s pharmacological profile is broader than that. A better explanation is that psilocin alters serotonergic signalling across several systems at once, and yawning itself is controlled by a surprisingly complicated neurological network.
Why Does Serotonin Matter?
Most people associate serotonin with mood, but it does far more than that. Serotonergic signalling helps regulate sleep and wakefulness, arousal, body temperature, appetite, mood, sensory processing, and a range of autonomic functions — and possibly the circuitry behind yawning too.
Psilocin doesn’t just flip a “psychedelic switch.” It temporarily shifts signalling across a system tied to many different physiological processes. Yawning specifically has been linked to serotonin, dopamine, and oxytocin pathways in the neuropharmacology literature, with serotonergic signalling identified as one of several interacting inputs rather than a single trigger (Argiolas & Melis, 1998; 2025 scoping review, MDPI). Yawning may be one visible piece of that broader shift.
But Why Am I Yawning If I’m Not Tired?
This is the confusing part. We reflexively associate yawning with exhaustion, but that’s not its only trigger. Humans also yawn during transitions between states of arousal — waking up, falling asleep, feeling anxious. Athletes yawn before competition.
So repeated yawning during a psychedelic experience doesn’t mean your body wants sleep. It more likely reflects your nervous system moving through an unusual shift in arousal and serotonergic activity.
Why Does It Often Happen During the Come-Up?
This is where people’s experiences get interesting. Yawning is frequently reported during the come-up — the window when the effects first become noticeable.
Someone takes magic truffles and initially feels normal. Then: a big yawn, then another, watery eyes, a body that wants to stretch. Music starts sounding different. Colours sharpen slightly. Thoughts begin shifting. And they realise: it’s starting.
That doesn’t make yawning a biological countdown timer. But the timing tracks — this is exactly when psilocin concentrations are climbing and the nervous system is beginning to respond. Why Do Your Eyes Water When You Yawn?
This part isn’t mysterious. Yawning involves coordinated movements of the face and jaw that interact with the structures around your eyes and tear drainage system — which is why eyes water during an ordinary yawn too. Yawn repeatedly on psilocybin, and you’ll likely notice more tearing than usual. It doesn’t necessarily mean you’re crying emotionally, though during a psychedelic experience, you might be doing both.
What About All the Stretching?
Yawn, stretch, deep breath, repeat — stretching and yawning naturally pair up even without psychedelics, as part of broader shifts in arousal and behavioural state. Under psilocybin, body awareness can amplify dramatically. A normal stretch can suddenly feel enormous. You notice muscles, breathing, and posture you’d normally ignore entirely, which can turn something as ordinary as stretching into a significant part of the experience.
Why Do Some People Yawn Constantly While Others Don’t?
We don’t have a definitive answer here either. Psychedelic responses vary enormously between people — two people can take similar amounts and have completely different physical and psychological experiences. The differences may come down to individual neurobiology, serotonin receptor sensitivity, metabolism, dose, how tired or well-rested someone is, anxiety or excitement levels, expectations going in, other medications or substances in their system, or simply where they’re at physically and emotionally that day.
There’s no validated formula that predicts who yawns thirty times and who doesn’t yawn at all. Individual variability is one of the defining features of psychedelic experiences.
Does More Yawning Mean a Stronger Trip?
Not necessarily — and this is a myth worth retiring. Someone can yawn repeatedly through a fairly modest experience, while someone else has an intense trip and barely yawns once. Yawning isn’t a reliable measure of potency or intensity. It’s simply one possible physiological response among many.
What About Nausea and the “Body Load”?
Yawning can show up alongside what people commonly call the body load: butterflies in the stomach, feeling unusually heavy or light, temperature swings, tingling, muscle tension, nausea, an urge to stretch, heightened breathing awareness.
These sensations don’t necessarily share one cause. Psilocin affects serotonin receptors, and serotonin signalling isn’t confined to the brain — it plays roles throughout the body. At the same time, psychedelic states dramatically shift interoception, your perception of what’s happening inside your own body. You may become intensely aware of sensations you’d normally never notice.
Three Yawning Myths Worth Retiring
A few explanations get repeated constantly in psychedelic and wellness spaces, and none of them hold up well.
“Your brain needs more oxygen.” This is one of the oldest yawning myths in general, not just for psilocybin, and it hasn’t held up scientifically. Yawning is far more complicated than a simple oxygen top-up. That said, genuine difficulty breathing is a different thing entirely and should never be waved off as “just the trip.”
“Your body is releasing stored trauma.” Could you yawn during an emotionally powerful moment? Sure. Could it feel like a release? Also sure. But that’s different from claiming science has shown yawning physically removes trauma from the nervous system — there’s no good evidence for that. Psychedelic experiences can involve intense emotional processing without turning every physiological response into proof of something leaving the body.
“The mushrooms are detoxing you.” Your body’s detox systems are your liver and kidneys, primarily. Sweating, yawning, or watery eyes during a trip shouldn’t be read as toxins exiting your system. The real neurobiology is interesting enough without inventing an explanation.
Could Yawning Be Contagious During a Group Trip?
Here’s where it gets strange. Yawning is contagious even without psychedelics — seeing, hearing, or even just thinking about yawning can trigger it. Now put several people together with heightened sensory awareness, emotional responsiveness, and attention to each other. One person yawns. Another notices. Then yawns. Then another. It can feel like everyone just entered the same physiological state together.
That doesn’t necessarily mean psilocybin created some special collective phenomenon — ordinary contagious yawning may simply become far more noticeable inside an altered state.
Do Other Serotonergic Drugs Cause Yawning?
This is one of the strongest clues pointing to serotonin. Yawning isn’t unique to psilocybin — SSRIs are well documented to induce excessive yawning as a side effect, while opioids tend to suppress it, a contrast researchers point to as evidence of serotonin’s role in the behaviour (2025 scoping review on drug-induced yawning). That doesn’t prove any single receptor is responsible; yawning involves multiple, overlapping neurotransmitter systems, which is exactly why it resists a simple explanation. But it does strengthen the broader case that shifting serotonin signalling influences the neural machinery behind yawning.
When Does the Yawning Stop?
For most people, it seems most noticeable during the transition into the psychedelic state rather than staying constant throughout. But there’s no universal timeline — some people yawn a handful of times during the come-up, others get waves of it throughout, others don’t experience it at all. Psychedelic responses are highly individual.
Should You Be Worried?
Generally, no. Yawning on its own isn’t an alarming sign during a psilocybin experience, and if you’re otherwise feeling okay, there’s usually no reason to assume anything dangerous is happening.
But responsible psychedelic education means not blaming every physical symptom on the psychedelic by default. Severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, loss of consciousness, seizures, or any other serious medical symptom needs real medical attention. “It’s just the mushrooms” should never be an excuse to ignore genuine warning signs. So Why Does Psilocybin Make You Yawn?
Here’s the answer, in plain terms: psilocybin converts into psilocin, which interacts strongly with your brain’s serotonin system. Serotonin regulates arousal and a range of automatic processes, and yawning itself involves several overlapping neurotransmitter systems. Researchers haven’t pinned down one definitive mechanism for psilocybin-induced yawning, but altered serotonergic and nervous-system activity is a strong scientific lead.
What it isn’t: proof that you’re tired, proof your brain is short on oxygen, proof you’re detoxing, or proof that trauma is leaving your body. Sometimes it’s simply one of the strange physiological signals that comes with crossing into an altered state.
One of the Strangest Parts of Psychedelic Science
We can scan the human brain, measure psilocin concentrations, and map serotonin receptors down to the binding site. And yet something as ordinary as a yawn still doesn’t have a fully settled explanation. That’s psychedelic science in a nutshell right now: real, measurable progress alongside genuine unknowns.
So the next time someone asks why they can’t stop yawning on mushrooms, the honest answer isn’t “we know exactly why.” It’s that serotonin and psilocin are clearly part of the story — even if the full mechanism is still being worked out.
