Psychedelic Honey: What to Do With Your Mushroom Harvest
If you’ve ever grown your own magic mushrooms, you know the strange feeling of ending up with more than you expected. A good flush can leave you staring at a pile of dried caps wondering what you’re actually going to do with all of it.
Eating dried mushrooms straight isn’t for everyone. The taste is earthy, a little bitter, and not exactly something most people look forward to.
That’s where psychedelic honey comes in.
Sometimes called “Blue Honey,” it’s essentially dried mushrooms combined with honey. You end up with something that’s easier to use, masks much of the mushroom taste, and gives you another way to store and enjoy your harvest.
Since cultivated psilocybin mushrooms can’t be sold as dried mushrooms in Dutch smartshops, this is really a project for people growing their own at home. If you’re thinking about starting, our Golden Teacher Grow Kit is one of the more approachable options for first-time growers.
Already have a dried harvest sitting in front of you? Here’s what you can do with it.
Why Make Psychedelic Honey?
The obvious reason is taste.
Honey does a pretty good job of covering the earthy flavor of dried mushrooms, but convenience is another big advantage. Instead of having dried mushrooms sitting around, you’re turning part of your harvest into something that can be mixed into foods or drinks.
Honey can also provide a low-moisture environment for storage when everything is prepared properly. The important part is starting with completely dried mushrooms and keeping the finished mixture sealed, cool and away from light.
It isn’t magic preservation, though. Psilocybin-containing mushrooms can gradually lose potency over time, regardless of how they’re stored.
How to Make It
Making Blue Honey is surprisingly simple. You only need completely dried mushrooms, honey, a clean glass jar and an accurate scale.
The key is keeping everything dry, knowing exactly how much mushroom material goes into the jar, and mixing it thoroughly.
Here’s a simple recipe you can follow at home.
Blue Honey Recipe
Making Blue Honey doesn’t need to be complicated. The most important thing is starting with completely dried magic mushrooms, using a clean, dry jar and keeping track of exactly what you’ve put into it.
What You’ll Need
4.6 g completely dried mushrooms
132 g pourable honey
4 oz (approximately 120 ml) clean glass jar
Accurate digital scale
Spice grinder or small blender
Clean, dry spoon
Method
Grind the mushrooms
Make sure your mushrooms are completely dry, then grind them into a fine, even powder. You don’t want large pieces left behind.
Weigh everything
Using an accurate scale, weigh 4.6 g of mushroom powder and add it to your clean, completely dry glass jar.
Add the honey
Add 132 g of honey. Stir slowly and thoroughly, scraping around the sides and bottom of the jar until the mushroom powder appears as evenly distributed as possible.
Label and store
Seal the jar tightly and clearly label it so nobody mistakes it for ordinary honey. Store it somewhere cool, dark and dry, safely away from children and pets.
A Note About Measuring
The entire jar contains 4.6 g of dried mushroom material, but don’t assume that every teaspoon will contain exactly the same amount.
Mushroom potency naturally varies, and the mushroom material may not remain perfectly distributed throughout the honey. A teaspoon or tablespoon measures volume rather than the actual weight or potency of the mushroom material.
What to Expect
Mixing mushrooms with honey doesn’t fundamentally change what psilocybin does.
The experience can still include changes in perception, visual effects, altered thinking, emotional sensitivity and shifts in your sense of time or surroundings.
What you shouldn’t assume is that every spoonful, mushroom or harvest will be exactly the same.
Potency naturally varies. Your experience can also be influenced by how much you’ve consumed, individual sensitivity, recent food intake, mindset and the environment you’re in.
That’s why treating psychedelic honey like ordinary honey is a bad idea.
On Dosing
There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to dosing.
Potency can vary between individual mushrooms and batches, and the experience can be influenced by individual sensitivity, mindset, setting and whether you’ve recently eaten.
Start low and give it time.
Wait at least 90 minutes before considering taking more, as effects can sometimes take longer than expected to fully develop. Taking more too quickly can result in a much stronger experience than intended.
For better consistency, use an accurate scale rather than estimating dried mushrooms by eye. It’s also worth keeping track of how much dried mushroom material went into the entire jar and how much honey you used.

Keeping It Fresh
Storage doesn’t need to be complicated, but a few things really matter.
Use an airtight glass jar and keep it somewhere cool and dark. A cupboard is a much better home for it than a sunny kitchen windowsill.
Most importantly, only use properly dried mushrooms.
Fresh mushrooms contain a lot of water. Introducing that moisture into honey changes the storage conditions and increases the risk of fermentation or spoilage.
And don’t rely entirely on a calendar.
If something smells unusual, shows signs of mold, has unexpected moisture or simply doesn’t look right, don’t consume it.
A Few Common Questions
Can I Mix Psychedelic Honey Into Food or Drinks?
Yes. Some people stir it into tea or smoothies or use a small amount with food.
If you’re adding it to something hot, avoid prolonged exposure to very high temperatures. Psilocybin isn’t instantly destroyed the moment it touches a warm drink, but extended exposure to heat can contribute to degradation.
Will It Lose Strength Over Time?
Eventually, yes.
Honey doesn’t freeze potency in time. Psilocybin and related compounds can gradually degrade, particularly when exposed to unfavorable storage conditions.
Keeping the mixture airtight, cool and protected from light is more sensible than leaving it somewhere warm or repeatedly opening the jar.
Does Blue Honey Actually Turn Blue?
Not necessarily.
The “blue” in Blue Honey comes from the characteristic blue bruising associated with psilocybin mushrooms. Your finished honey doesn’t need to become bright blue for the preparation to have worked.
What If It Smells or Looks Strange?
Don’t take chances with questionable food.
Visible mold, unexpected fermentation, unusual moisture or an off smell are good reasons to throw it away.
Choosing Mushrooms to Grow
You’ll see plenty of claims online that one mushroom variety is “more visual” while another is “more spiritual” or “more introspective.”
Take those descriptions with a grain of salt.
Different grows can vary considerably in potency, and dose, individual sensitivity, mindset and setting can have a much bigger influence on the experience than the name printed on the grow kit.
For someone learning to cultivate for the first time, we’d focus more on how manageable the grow is.
Golden Teacher is popular with beginners and experienced growers alike. B+ is another well-known cultivation option, while McKennaii is also widely grown by home cultivators.
Whichever you choose, follow the instructions supplied with your particular kit rather than mixing advice from several different growing methods.
Temperature matters too. If your growing space gets genuinely cold, particularly during the European winter, a cultivation heat mat may help maintain more suitable conditions. Just remember that warmer isn’t automatically better. Follow the recommended temperature range for your specific kit.
Important Safety Note
Psilocybin mushrooms are psychoactive and can produce strong, unpredictable effects. Do not drive, cycle, operate machinery or combine them with alcohol or other drugs. Use extra caution if you take medication or have a personal or family history of serious mental health conditions, and seek professional medical advice if you’re unsure whether psilocybin is appropriate for you.
Always clearly label psychedelic honey and store it securely out of reach of children and pets. Because it looks and tastes like ordinary honey, there is a real risk of accidental consumption if it isn’t properly labelled and stored.
Potency can vary considerably between individual mushrooms and batches. Start cautiously, avoid taking more simply because effects haven’t appeared yet, and use in a safe environment with people you trust.
If someone experiences severe or concerning symptoms, seek medical help or contact your local emergency or poison-information service.
One Last Thing
There’s something satisfying about growing your own mushrooms from a kit, watching the first pins appear, harvesting them and then deciding what to do with what you’ve grown.
Psychedelic honey is one option.
It’s simple, it deals with a taste that plenty of people don’t particularly enjoy, and it’s a more interesting use for part of a harvest than forgetting about a jar of dried mushrooms at the back of a cupboard.
Just treat the finished honey with the same respect you would the mushrooms themselves. Know what’s in it, label it, store it responsibly, start low and don’t rush the experience.
